Body of Coloured Emotions, 2024
Body of Coloured Emotions (2024) is an interactive webcam-based work programmed by the artist to translate human-generated sound into visual changes in real time. The volume and pitch of different frequencies—particularly low and high tones—affect visual elements such as colour intensity, hue, and clarity, continuously transforming the image on screen.
Using the webcam as both a recording device and part of the work itself, the piece takes on a different appearance in each space in which it is installed. The surrounding environment, the presence of the viewer, and the sounds produced within the space become inputs that continually alter the image. This real-time process reflects the emotional shifts that occur when we encounter and communicate with another person: communication is not fixed, but changes in response to voice, presence, and circumstance.
At the same time, the artist introduces another mechanism into this process of visualising emotion. Although the image appears to respond in real time, what the viewer actually encounters is not the absolute present, but an image from the immediate past. A slight temporal delay is deliberately embedded into the system, allowing the viewer to observe a version of themselves that has already passed.
This temporal displacement reflects the nature of spoken communication. Once a word has been uttered, it cannot remain in the present; the moment it leaves us, it has already become part of the past. The work therefore transforms the webcam from a simple device for reflecting the viewer into a system that exposes the small distance between speaking, perceiving, and remembering.
Through this continuous cycle of sound, image, response, and delay, Body of Coloured Emotions explores emotion not as a fixed internal state, but as something produced and transformed through encounters with others.

〈감정의 색체 Body of Coloured Emotions〉(2024)는 사람이 만들어내는 소리를 실시간으로 시각적 변화로 변환하도록 작가가 프로그래밍한 인터랙티브 웹캠 작품이다. 소리를 구성하는 저음과 고음의 크기와 높낮이는 색의 농도와 색채, 선명도 등의 시각적 요소에 영향을 주며, 스크린 위의 이미지를 지속적으로 변화시킨다.
웹캠은 기록 장치인 동시에 작품을 구성하는 하나의 요소로 작동한다. 작품이 설치된 공간의 환경과 관객의 존재, 그 안에서 발생하는 소리가 입력값이 되기 때문에 작품은 놓이는 장소마다 서로 다른 모습을 만들어낸다. 이러한 실시간의 기술적 과정은 우리가 누군가를 만나 소통하는 동안 발생하는 감정의 변화를 대변한다. 소통은 고정된 상태가 아니라 목소리와 존재, 그리고 상황에 반응하며 끊임없이 변화한다.
동시에 작가는 감정을 시각화하는 이 과정에 또 하나의 장치를 개입시킨다. 관객이 마주하는 이미지는 실시간으로 반응하는 것처럼 보이지만, 실제로 보고 있는 것은 완전한 현재가 아니라 아주 직전의 과거이다. 시스템에는 의도적인 시간적 지연이 존재하며, 관객은 이미 지나가 버린 자신의 모습을 관찰하게 된다.
이러한 시간의 어긋남은 우리가 말을 통해 소통하는 방식과 닮아 있다. 한 번 입 밖으로 나온 말은 현재에 머물 수 없으며, 우리에게서 떠나는 순간 이미 과거의 일부가 된다. 따라서 이 작품에서 웹캠은 단순히 관객의 모습을 비추는 장치가 아니라, 말하는 것과 지각하는 것, 그리고 기억하는 것 사이에 존재하는 작은 시간적 거리를 드러내는 시스템으로 작동한다.
〈감정의 색체〉는 이처럼 소리와 이미지, 반응과 지연이 반복되는 과정을 통해 감정을 고정된 내면의 상태로 바라보기보다, 타인과의 마주침과 소통 속에서 발생하고 지속적으로 변화하는 것으로 제시한다.
