Pride (Miss Elizabeth), 2024 / Prejudice (Mr Darcy), 2024
The artist began by asking why we so often fail to communicate with one another, and found pride and prejudice to be fitting terms through which to consider this question. The phrase shares its title with Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice. Drawing on its two protagonists, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy, as symbolic figures, the artist created Pride (Miss Elizabeth) (2024) and Prejudice (Mr Darcy) (2024).
For these works, the artist asked ChatGPT (AI) to analyse the two characters and the works themselves. Based on this analysis, she developed a short fictional continuation of their story and used it to construct a series of image prompts. The resulting images, generated through image-generation AI, were then processed through a visual method the artist has developed across her previous works.
Through a process of coding, the flat images are translated into text-based data and subsequently fragmented. The artist deliberately introduces the moiré effect—a visual interference commonly associated with screens and monitors—to produce an ‘error’ or ‘collision’. This error functions as a trigger, exploiting the perceptual instability that occurs as the viewer attempts to read the image.
The resulting work turns this moment of visual misperception into part of the work itself, using technological error as a condition through which the image is continuously reconstructed in the act of viewing.
